“Posture 15 (Achilles and Briseis)” by Agostino Carracci
based on art from Pompeii,Italy
After Achilles killed Briseis’ husband, King Mynes of Lyrnessus, he took Briseis as his concubine. When Agamemnon had to give up his own concubine, he commandeered Briseis. As a result, Achilles refused to fight for Agamemnon.
Although a concubine, Achilles loved Briseis and she him. Briseis laments over the dead boy of Patroclus that he had promised to persuade Achilles to marry her.
Shortly after the happy reunion between Achilles and Briseis, Achilles was killed in battle.
